Zero Waste - "The Art of Repair" by Molly Martin

 

Una parte muy importante de reducir residuos es aprender a reparar nuestros objetos más queridos y Molly Martin  ha hecho un verdadero arte de ello.

Para ella todo empezó cuando sus calcetines favoritos se desgastaron por el uso y, en lugar de tirarlos, decidió remendarlos con un poco de lana y ahora es una ilustradora, artista y reparadora textil que, desde su estudio en Brixton, se dedica a dar una segunda oportunidad a objetos que merece la pena conservar.

En su libro "The Art of Repair"  recopila y explica en detalle distintas técnicas de costura y bordado que pueden servir para reparar aquellas prendas que para nosotros tienen un valor especial y de las que nos resulta difícil desprendernos. Todo ello enfocado como un ensayo sobre el "slow living"  y el valor real de las cosas, lo que ella llama "mindful mending". 

Mis habilidades de costura y bordado están muy lejos de estar al nivel de las de Molly  pero nunca es tarde para aprender y espero que su libro me ayude a dar una segunda oportunidad a mis prendas más especiales.

A very important part of waste reduction is learning to mend our most cherished items and  Molly Martin  has made a real art out of it.

For her everything started when her favorite socks worn away by the use and, instead of throwing them away, she decided to mend them with some wool and now she is an illustrator, artist and textile repairer who, from her studio in Brixton, is devoted to giving a second chance to items worth keeping.

In her book  "The Art of Repair" she compiles and explains in detail different sewing and embroidery techniques that can serve to mend those garments that have a special value for us and that we find difficult to get rid of. All of that approached as an essay about "slow living" and the real worth of things, what she calls "mindful mending".

My sewing and embroidery skills are far from being at the level of  Molly's but it is never late to learn and I hope that her book can help me in giving a second chance to my more special clothes.

En mi lista de proyectos de verano siempre hay hueco para hacer algún bolsito de punto o ganchillo y este año no iba a ser menos.

Para escoger el modelo he recurrido otra vez al libro de eccomin  y es que me gustan tanto sus diseños que me he propuesto hacerlos todos poco a poco.

Todavía tengo que terminar algunas cosas antes de empezar a hacer mi bolsito pero estoy deseando ponerme a ello...

On my list of summer projects there's always space to make a knit or crochet bag and this year it won't be different.

To choose the pattern I have returned again to  eccomin's book as I like her design that much that I have decided to make all of them little by little.

I still have to finish some things before I start making my bag but I am really looking forward to it...

Posavasos de fieltro estilo "vintage" / Vintage style felted coasters

 

Después de mis posavasos de fieltro en forma de nube  he seguido experimentando con la técnica del fieltrado y esta vez he hecho unos posavasos con flores de inspiración "vintage".

La idea la cogí del libro "Mollie Makes Crochet" y es un patrón de Ilaria Chiaratti  de Ida Interior Lifestyle  originalmente pensado para una funda de un cojín pero que a mi me pareció perfecto para hacer unos posavasos.

Antes de decidirme por este diseño tenía pensado hacer algo completamente distinto pero creo que la combinación de colores en tonos mostaza queda muy bien con el motivo "sunburst" y le da ese toque de estilo retro que tanto me gusta.

Hasta ahora no me había dado cuenta de todas las posibilidades que ofrece el fieltrado y, aunque podría seguir añadiendo diseños de posavasos hasta el infinito, de momento este va a ser mi último proyecto y me reservo todas las ideas que se me han ido ocurriendo para después del verano.

¿Conseguiré resistir a la tentación de fieltrar más cosas?

After my cloud shaped felt coasters I have continued experimenting with the felting technique and this time I have made some vintage inspired flower coasters.

I took the idea from "Mollie Makes Crochet" book and it is a pattern by Ilaria Chiaratti from Ida Interior Lifestyle originally thought for a cushion cover but it appeared to me that it would be perfect to make some coasters.

Before choosing this design I had thought of making something completely different but I find that the combination of colours in mustard shades matches very well with "sunburst" motif and it adds that retro style touch which I really like.

Until the moment I hadn't realised all the possibilites that felting offers and, although I could keep adding coasters designs to infinity, at the moment this is going to be my last project and I will preserve all the ideas I've been thinking of to make them after this summer.

Will I resist the temptation of felting more things?

Tyrone the English Bull Terrier

Hace dos años compré el libro "Edward's Menagerie: Dogs"  de Toft  con una idea muy concreta, hacer el patrón de "Tyrone el Bull Terrier inglés" como recuerdo de mi perro Rocky que nos había dejado unos meses antes.

En realidad, luego fue un poco más complicado y todavía no era el momento de hacer su versión en amigurumi así que aproveché el libro para hacer otros perritos, como "Rosie the Daschund" o  la pequeña Toni.

Sin embargo, siempre que veía el libro me acordaba de que tenía algo pendiente y este año ya no ha habido excusa y por fin tengo una versión en miniatura de mi querido Rocky.

Obviamente quería que fuera lo más parecido posible así que, en lugar de usar algodón, he escogido lana de DROPS Nepal  porque me parece que los tonos se asemejan más a su color natural.

Además, la lana es un poquito más gruesa que el algodón así que el perro es un poquito más grande que los otros que he hecho y eso lo hace más achuchable todavía.

Siempre me gusta hacer muñecos de amigurumi pero esta vez lo he disfrutado un montón y ahora me estoy planteando hacerle una colección de ropa a medida.

¿Qué os parece?

Two years ago I bought the book  "Edward's Menagerie: Dogs" by Toft with a very specific idea, making the pattern of "Tyrone the English Bull Terrier" in memory of my dog Rocky who had left us a couple of months before.

Actually, later it was a little bit more complicated and it wasn't the moment to make his amigurumi version yet so I used the book to make other dogs, such as "Rosie the Daschund" or little Toni.

However, every time I saw the book I remembered I had something pending and this year I had no excuse and I finally have a mini version of my beloved Rocky.

Obviously I wanted it to be as most similar as possible so, instead of using cotton, I have chosen DROPS Nepal wool because I think that the shades resemble better his natural colour.

In addition, the wool is a little bit thicker than the cotton so the dog is a little bit bigger than the other ones I've made and that makes it still more huggable.

I always like making amigurumi puppets but this time I have enjoyed it a lot and now I am thinking about making a customised clothing collection.

How do you find it?

Zero Waste - "Project 333" by Courtney Carver

Desde hace algún tiempo estoy concienciada con ser más sostenible en mi estilo de vida y uno de los primeros pasos que he dado en ese sentido ha sido seguir el desafío "Make Nine Challenge"  con la intención de dar uso a los ovillos que tengo almacenados en casa transformándolos en proyectos concretos que me gusten y vaya a disfrutar una vez terminados.

Sin embargo, creo que también es necesario avanzar en otros aspectos de mi vida y, por eso, estoy en proceso de adaptar mi armario al "Proyecto 333"  de "Be More with Less".

Descubrí esta iniciativa a través de Internet y, como me pareció una propuesta muy interesante, decidí comprar el libro con la intención de que me sirviera como guía en el proceso que, desde el principio, supe que no me iba a resultar fácil.

La idea inicial es muy sencilla: elegir 33 prendas para utilizar durante los 3 meses siguientes. 

Lo que es complicado, por lo menos en mi caso, es adoptar el proceso mental (y emocional) que lleva a ser capaz de realizar esa elección. No se trata de reducir el número de prendas porque sí, sino de ser capaz de simplificar algo tan “sencillo” cómo decidir qué ponernos porque tenemos claro el tipo de prendas que se ajustan realmente a nuestro estilo de vida. 

Todavía estoy en una fase muy inicial de toma de conciencia y, siendo sincera, no sé si llegaré a cumplir el objetivo de que sean sólo 33 prendas (¡me parecen muy pocas!) pero entiendo que es un proceso largo y voy a intentar seguir las pautas en todo lo que pueda para hacerlo lo mejor posible.

De momento, este verano mi objetivo principal es entrar en la dinámica de ser capaz de seleccionar mis imprescindibles (y deshacerme de todo lo demás) para seguir avanzando en otoño y dejar de perder el tiempo pensando en qué ponerme, o peor aún, en por qué tengo tanta ropa que nunca me pongo.

Since a while ago I am awared with having a more sustainable lifestyle and one of the first steps I've made in this sense is following the  "Make Nine Challenge" with the aim of using my stash yarn to transfrom it in specific projects that I like and that I am going to enjoy once finished.

However, I think it is also necessary to move forward in other aspects of my life and, that is why, I am in the process of adapting my wardrobe to  "Project 333" by  "Be More with Less".

I found about this initiative on the internet and, as I thought it was something that could fit what I needed, I decided to buy the book with the aim of using it as a guide in the process which, since the beginning, I knew that wasn't going to be easy for me.

The starting idea is very simple: choosing 33 garments to use during the following 3 months.

What is more complicated, at least for me, is to adopt the mental (and emotional) process that leads to being able to make that choice. It is not just reducing the number of garments mindless,but being able to simplify something as "easy" as deciding what to wear because we are clear about the type of garments that really fit our lifestyle.

I am still at a very early stage of awareness and, to be honest, I don't know whether I will be able to fulfill the objective of choosing just 33 garments (I think they are very few!) but I understand that it is a long process and I am going to try to follow the guidelines as much as I can so I can do my best.

At the moment, this summer my main objective is to come into the dynamics of being able to choose my essentials (and getting rid of all the rest) to continue progressing in autumn and stop losing time thinking about what to wear or, even worse, about why I have so many clothes that I never wear.

Harry Lobo / Harry Wolf

Cuando compré el libro de amigurumi  de Pica Pau sabía que no me iba a arrepentir y, aunque ha pasado mucho tiempo desde que hice a Robin Unicornio, nunca me olvido de lo bonitos que son sus personajes.

De hecho, cuando surge el momento de hacer un amigurumi  para cualquier ocasión es uno de mis libros de referencia y, así, hace poco lo he retomado para hacer a Harry Lobo, uno de los animales del libro que más me gustan.

La verdad es que nunca pensé que haría un lobo de ganchillo y mucho menos que me resultaría tan simpático pero supongo que ahí esta el mérito de Pica Pau, siempre consigue que sus diseños tengan ese aire de dibujo animado casi perfecto.

De momento no tengo nada en mente pero me encantaría ir haciendo todos los animales poco a poco...

When I bought  Pica Pau's  amigurumi book I knew I wasn't going to regret it and, although it's been a long time since I made  Robin Unicorn, I never forget how beautiful its characters are.

In fact, when the moment to make an  amigurumi arises for any occasion it is one of my books of reference and, this way, not long ago I came back to it to make Harry Wolf, one of the animals from the book I like the most.

The truth is I have never thought I would make a crochet wolf and much less that I would find him so nice but I guess that that is  Pica Pau's merit, she always achieves her designs to look like almost perfect cartoon characters.

At the moment I have nothing in mind but I would love to keep making all the animals little by little...

Trendy Châle

Uno de mis primeros proyectos de punto fue el "Trendy Châle" de Mlle. Sophie.

En aquel momento llevaba poco tiempo tejiendo y hacer algo diferente a una bufanda tradicional me parecía súper emocionante así que enseguida se convirtió en uno de mis proyectos favoritos.

Algunos años y varios diseños de Mlle. Sophie  después,  he tejido un nuevo "Trendy Châle"  para que su estilo "chic"  francés me inspire en los días de frío.

Además de estar encantada con el resultado también estoy muy orgullosa porque para tejerlo he utilizado unos ovillos de Phildar que llevaban mucho tiempo olvidados en mi "stash"  y  me parece que es una buena forma de empezar un nuevo año.

One of my first knitting projects was  Mlle. Sophie's "Trendy Châle".

At that moment I had been knitting for a little time and making something different to a traditional scarf seemed really thrilling so it quickly became one of my favorite projects.

Some years and several designs from  Mlle. Sophie after, I have knitted a new  "Trendy Châle" so its "chic" French style can inspire me on chilly days.

In addition to being very happy with the result I am also very proud as to knit it I have used some  Phildar skeins that had been forgotten for a long time in my stash and I think it is a good way to start a new year.

Antes de que llegue el otoño y sólo me apetezca tejer con lana gordita y calentita, quiero aprovechar para terminar algunos de los ovillos de algodón que tengo en mi "stash".

Así que, buscando ideas he recuperado el precioso libro escrito por eccomin  y he encontrado un proyecto perfecto para hacer en las próximas semanas. 

De momento esto es sólo un pequeño adelanto de los colores que he escogido aunque espero poder mostrar mis avances y el resultado final muy pronto.

P.D: Más cosas bonitas de eccomin  que he hecho: el Triangles Pouch  y el mini bolsito de ganchillo 

Before autumn arrives when I will only want to knit with chunky and warm wool, I would like to make the most to finish some of the cotton skeins I have on my stash.

So, looking for some ideas I've come back to the beautiful book written by  eccomin and I have found a perfect project to make during the next weeks.

By the moment this is only a little preview of the colours I have chosen although I hope to be able to show you my progress and the final result very soon.

Happy (Crafting) Weekend

Las próximas semanas voy a tener tiempo para tejer para mí así que además de seguir con mi jersey Garland  ya le he buscado proyecto a los ovillos que compré en Knit Knit Berlin.

He escogido un patrón del libro de accesorios de Mlle. Sophie  y, aparte de que me encanta todo lo que hace, su famosísimo Trendy Chale fue uno de los primeros proyectos que tejí allá por 2012 así que me hace ilusión porque me recuerda a mis comienzos con el blog y con las agujas.

Todavía no he empezado a tejer y ya estoy deseando tenerlo terminado...

During the following weeks I will have time to knit for myself so in addition to continuing with my  Garland sweater I have found a project for the yarn I bought in  Knit Knit Berlin.

I have chosen a pattern from  Mlle. Sophie's accesories book and, besides I love everything she makes, her famous  Trendy Chale was one of the first projects I knitted back in 2012 so it makes me happy because it reminds me of my beginning with the blog and the needles.

I haven't started knitting yet and I am already looking forward to finishing it...

Hace tiempo que soy fan de Pica-pau  y aunque hace ya unos cuantos meses que me compré su libro "La Banda de Pica Pau"  hasta ahora no había tenido tiempo de hacer ninguno de sus famosos amigurumi.

Ahora tengo una excusa muy buena para hacer uno de sus diseños y aunque me ha costado un poco decidirme qué animal hacer (obviamente quiero hacerlos todos...), me hace mucha ilusión pensar que seguramente este amigurumi  será el primer proyecto que termine el año que viene.

De momento os dejo con la intriga, pero espero poder enseñaros el resultado muy pronto...

I've been fan of  Pica-pau for a while and although I bought her book "Animal friends of Pica Pau" some months ago until now I didn't have time to make any of her famous  amigurumi.

Now I have a very good excuse to make one of her designs and although it took me quite a while to decide which animal to make (obviously I want to make them all...), I am very happy to think that this  amigurumi will probably be the first project that I finish next year.

By the moment I will keep you in suspense, but I hope to be able to show you the result very soon...

Rosie the Dachshund

Este es un proyecto que tenía muchas ganas de enseñaros, el perrito teckel de amigurumi que hice en verano siguiendo el patrón "Rosie the Dachshund"  del libro "Edward's Menagerie: Dogs"   del que ya os he hablado por aquí y en Instagram.

Cuando compré el libro me pareció el libro de amigurumi más bonito del mundo y después de hacer mi primer patrón sigo pensando lo mismo. 

Me encanta la idea poder hacer un perro de ganchillo que se parece tanto a un perro de verdad y que sus dueños al verlo digan "¡Es igual!",  como me ocurrió en este caso.

Como ya prometí, este es el comienzo de muchos más perritos...

This is a project I was really looking forward to showing you, the amigurumi teckel dog I made this summer following "Rosie the Dachshund" pattern from the book  "Edward's Menagerie: Dogs" which I told you about here and via   Instagram.

When I bought the book I thought it was the most beautiful amigurumi book in the world and after making my first pattern I keep thinking the same.

I love the idea of being able to make a crochet dog which looks so much like a real dog and that his/her owners say  "It's like him/her!" when they see it, as it happened in this case.

As I already promised, this is the beginning of many more little dogs...

Happy (Crafting) Weekend

Llega el fin de semana y empiezo un proyecto nuevo, un perro de ganchillo del precioso libro "Edward's Menagerie Dogs" de Kerry Lord  que os enseñé en primavera por Instagram.

El primer modelo que voy a hacer es "Rosie the Dachshund" una raza que yo siempre he conocido como "Teckel"  así que ahora gracias al libro he aprendido que a este tipo de perros se les puede llamar de las dos maneras.

En el libro hay un montón de razas diferentes (incluso algunas de las que nunca había oído hablar antes) a cada cual más mona, así que seguramente no será el único perro que haga.

The weekend is here and I am starting a new project, a crochet dog from "Edward's Menagerie Dogs" beautiful book by  Kerry Lord  which I showed you in spring through  Instagram.

The first design I am making is  "Rosie the Dachshund" a breed I have always known as "Teckel" so now thanks to the book I have learned that this kind of dogs can be called in both ways.

In the book there are a lot of different breeds (even some I have never heard before) one cuter than the other, so for sure this won't be the only dog I make.

Happy (Crafting) Weekend

Últimamente se me acumula el trabajo... 

Tengo cosas sin terminar pero también tengo ideas y proyectos nuevos que quiero hacer pero me falta tiempo o, por lo menos, a mí me da la sensación de que no avanzo tan rápido cómo me gustaría.

Por suerte el fin de semana siempre consigo dedicar un poco más de tiempo a mis labores así que espero que este sea productivo.

Lately I have some accumulation of work...

I have some unfinished things but I also have new ideas and projects that I want to make but I don't have time or, at least, I feel I don't progress as quickly as I would want to.

Luckily during the weekend I always find some extra time for my crafts so I hope this is a productive one.

Este mes de septiembre me he dejado llevar por el espíritu de la vuelta al cole y estoy retomando algunos de los proyectos que tenía pendientes, algunos desde el año pasado y otros desde hace un poco más de tiempo.

Por el momento ya he terminado el jersey Thornett, que ya está bloqueado y listo para una sesión de fotos.

El siguiente proyecto de la lista es mi manta "Granny Chic" que empecé allá por 2014 (todavía no puedo creer lo rápido que ha pasado el tiempo) que cuadradito a cuadradito esta semana ha crecido un poquito más. Tiene pinta de que va a ser una manta pequeña porque no calculé muy bien la cantidad de ovillos, pero con terminarla este invierno me doy por satisfecha.

La verdad es que no sé por qué dejo algunos proyectos sin terminar, supongo que me puede la novedad y soy incapaz de resistirme a empezar cosas diferentes... 

¿Soy la única?

P.D: Tengo que dedicar una entrada en "Craft Books" al libro "Crochet Living" de Debbie Bliss porque tiene unos proyectos de ganchillo súper bonitos ♥

This month of September I've left myself get carried away by back to school spirit and I am taking up some of my pending projects, some since last year and another ones since a little more time.

At present I have already finished  Thornett top, which is already blocked and ready for a photo shoot.

The next project in the list is my  "Granny Chic" blanket which I started back in 2014 (I still can't believe how quickly time has passed) and that granny by granny this week has grown a little bit more. It seems that it is going to be a small blanket as I didn't figure very well the number of balls, but if I finish it this winter I will be satisfied.

Actually I don't know why I leave some projects unfinished, I guess I like new things and I can't resist starting different things...

Am I the only one?

P.S: I have to write a "Craft Books" post about the book "Crochet Living" by Debbie Bliss because it is full of super beautiful crochet projects ♥

Cosas que me gustan / Things I like # 32 - Penguin Knit Cover

Los libros son una de las cosas que más me gustan y una de mis editoriales favoritas es Penguin porque me recuerda a mis primeras lecturas en inglés y porque es todo un símbolo de la cultura "British" así que esta original funda de punto inspirada en los clásicos libros naranjas de Penguin Books me parece simplemente maravillosa.

La creadora es Cally Barker una artista británica que sabe combinar a la perfección su pasión por los libros y las artes textiles.

¿No os parece una idea genial?


Books are one of the things I like the most and Penguin is one of my favorite publishers because it reminds me of my first English readings and because it is a great icon of British culture so I think that this original knit cover inspired by the classical orange Penguin Books is simply wonderful.

The maker is Cally Barker a British artist who knows how to perfectly mix her passion for books and textile arts.

Don't you think it is a great idea?

Desde que recibí el libro de eccomin he estado deseando empezar a hacer sus proyectos y esta semana por fin ha llegado el momento.

No ha sido fácil elegir por cuál empezar primero porque todos los proyectos del libro son preciosos pero, tras hojear varias veces el libro, me he decidido por uno. Total, me imagino que al final los acabaré haciendo casi todos. 

Hasta el momento sólo he tejido unas cuantas vueltas así que tendréis que esperar un poco para ver el resultado...

Since I received eccomin's book I've been looking forward to start making her projects and this week the moment finally arrived.

It was not easy to decide which one to start first because all the projects of the book are beautiful but, after browsing the book several times, I have chosen one. All in all, I imagine that in the end I will be making almost all of them.

Until the moment I have only knitted some rows so you will have to wait a little bit to see the result... 

Craft Books ♥ 9 - Laura Ameba

Hace unos años compré un kit de aguja mágica que todavía no he estrenado, algo muy típico en mí…

Desde entonces he ido coleccionando ideas que me gustaban en mi tablero Punch Needle de Pinterest y uno de los nombres que más se repetía en los diseños era el de Laura Ameba, una chilena afincada en Barcelona que con sus bordados maravillosos ha conquistado Japón donde ha publicado su primer libro.

A pesar de que el libro sólo está escrito en japonés no podía no tenerlo en  mi biblioteca craft así que desde principios de año tengo mi copia llegada directamente de Japón con dedicatoria y regalitos sorpresa incluidos.

Aunque no domino el idioma, no resulta complicado entender las instrucciones porque incluye dibujos en los que se indica cómo realizar los distintos tipos de bordados y hay varias fotos explicativas del paso a paso.

Este es el segundo libro llegado de Japón que se incorpora a mi colección (el primero fue el de mi admirada eccomin) y no creo que sea el último porque sus libros de manualidades son de los más bonitos que hay.

Ahora sólo me hace falta empezar a practicar...


A couple of years ago I bought a punch needle set which I haven't used yet, something very typical of me...

Since then I've been collecting some ideas I liked on my Punch Needle board in Pinterest and one of the names I saw the most was Laura Ameba, a girl from Chile settled in Barcelona who has conquered Japan with her embroideries where she has published her first book.

Despite the book being written in Japanese only I just couldn't resist not having it in my craft library so since the beginning of the year I have my own copy directly arrived from Japan with a dedication and some surprise gifts included.

Although I don't speak the language it is not difficult to understand the instructions as it includes drawings showing how to make the different types of embroidery stitches and there are some step by step explanatory pictures.

This is the second book arrived from Japan joining my collection (the first one was from my admired eccomin) and I don't think it would be the last one because their craft books are the most beautiful ones.

Now I only have to start practising...
