Zero Waste - "The Art of Repair" by Molly Martin

 

Una parte muy importante de reducir residuos es aprender a reparar nuestros objetos más queridos y Molly Martin  ha hecho un verdadero arte de ello.

Para ella todo empezó cuando sus calcetines favoritos se desgastaron por el uso y, en lugar de tirarlos, decidió remendarlos con un poco de lana y ahora es una ilustradora, artista y reparadora textil que, desde su estudio en Brixton, se dedica a dar una segunda oportunidad a objetos que merece la pena conservar.

En su libro "The Art of Repair"  recopila y explica en detalle distintas técnicas de costura y bordado que pueden servir para reparar aquellas prendas que para nosotros tienen un valor especial y de las que nos resulta difícil desprendernos. Todo ello enfocado como un ensayo sobre el "slow living"  y el valor real de las cosas, lo que ella llama "mindful mending". 

Mis habilidades de costura y bordado están muy lejos de estar al nivel de las de Molly  pero nunca es tarde para aprender y espero que su libro me ayude a dar una segunda oportunidad a mis prendas más especiales.

A very important part of waste reduction is learning to mend our most cherished items and  Molly Martin  has made a real art out of it.

For her everything started when her favorite socks worn away by the use and, instead of throwing them away, she decided to mend them with some wool and now she is an illustrator, artist and textile repairer who, from her studio in Brixton, is devoted to giving a second chance to items worth keeping.

In her book  "The Art of Repair" she compiles and explains in detail different sewing and embroidery techniques that can serve to mend those garments that have a special value for us and that we find difficult to get rid of. All of that approached as an essay about "slow living" and the real worth of things, what she calls "mindful mending".

My sewing and embroidery skills are far from being at the level of  Molly's but it is never late to learn and I hope that her book can help me in giving a second chance to my more special clothes.

Make Nine Challenge 2021

 

Como ya os adelanté en mi entrada anterior, después de haber tenido una experiencia muy positiva, este año me he animado a participar otra vez en el desafío "Make Nine Challenge"  de  Home Row Fiber Co.

Una vez más he intentado seguir la misma premisa de sostenibilidad y he seleccionado proyectos que puedo hacer con algunos de los ovillos que tengo en casa y, aunque ha habido lugar para algún que otro capricho, creo este año también voy a conseguir reducir mi "stash".

Por otro lado, también he intentado ser práctica y he escogido varios jerséis (entre ellos el "Holiday Sweater"  de PetiteKnit  que me quedó pendiente el año pasado) porque al final es lo que más utilizo y disfruto mucho tejiéndolos.

Espero que os guste mi selección (podéis ver toda la información sobre cada proyecto debajo de la foto).

As I already advanced in my previous post, after having a very positive experience, this year I have encouraged myself to participate again in the  "Make Nine Challenge" by  Home Row Fiber Co.

Once more I have tried to follow the same premise of sustainability and I have chosen projects that I can make with some of the skeins I have at home and, although there has been place to some treats, I think this year I will also succeed in reducing my "stash".

On the other hand, I have also tried to be practical and I have chosen several sweaters (among them  "Holiday Sweater" by  PetiteKnit which I didn't make last year) because in the end it's what I use the most and I really enjoy knitting them.

Cosas que me gustan / Things I like # 46 - Pull Rainbow by Katia Sanchez

Últimamente no pienso más que en tejer jerséis y, entre mis favoritos de esta temporada, está el jersey "Rainbow"  de Katia Sanchez.

Como me ocurre muy a menudo, con este jersey he tenido un auténtico flechazo. Me encanta el diseño de las mangas abullonadas y, cómo no, el arcoíris tejido en intarsia en la parte delantera.

Por si esto no fuera suficiente, Katia Sanchez promueve una producción sostenible de prendas de punto basada en la importancia de hacer compras conscientes escogiendo artículos que realmente nos enamoren y que están pensados para durar en el tiempo. 

Además, nos da la opción de comprar los jerséis ya confeccionados o de tejerlos siguiendo sus propios patrones (o incluso de asistir a uno de sus talleres monográficos para tejer los distintos modelos si tienes la suerte de vivir en París).

¿Alguien más está soñando con un jersey arcoíris, además de con un viaje a París?

Lately I think a lot about knitting sweaters and "Rainbow" pull by Katia Sanchez is  among my favorites of this season,

As it usually happens to me, I had a real crush with this sweater. I love the design of the puffy sleeves and, of course,  the intarsia rainbow on the front.

In case this was not enough, Katia Sanchez promotes a sustainable production of knit garments basing on the importance of making conscious purchases choosing items that we really love and that are conceived to last in time.

In addition, she offers the possibilty of buying the sweaters already made or of knitting them following her own patterns (or even attending one of her monographic workshops to knit the different designs if you are lucky enough to live in Paris).

Anyone else is dreaming of a rainbow sweater, as well as a trip to Paris?

Zero Waste - Recycled Yarn

 

Uno de los objetivos del Proyecto 333  es aprender a ser más sostenible a través de la reutilización de nuestra ropa y uno de los ejemplos que se mencionan en el libro es la iniciativa "Recycled Yarn"  de Misti Nolen .

Su propuesta consiste en convertir prendas de punto "antiguas" en madejas de hilo de distintos materiales de origen natural (lino, algodón, cachemir, lana merino...) que  luego vende en su tienda de Etsy.

La idea me llamó mucho la atención cuando leí el libro porque nunca me había imaginado que pudiera deshacerse una prenda de origen industrial con tanta habilidad como para conservar el hilo intacto y listo para usar de nuevo.

Desde el punto de vista de la sostenibilidad me parece un proyecto muy interesante pero, además, las madejas tienen una presentación tan impecable que no puedo dejar de maravillarme con todo el proceso.

¿No os parece una iniciativa maravillosa?

One of the objetives of  Project 333 is learning to be more sustainable through the upcycling of our clothes and one of the examples named on the book is  "Recycled Yarn" initiative by  Misti Nolen.

Her proposal consists of turning "old" knit garments into yarn skeins of natural fibers (linen, cotton, cashmere, merino wool...) that she later sells in her  Etsy shop.

The idea really caught my attention when I read the book because I had never imagined that it was possible to undo an industrial garment in such a skilled way to keep the yarn intact and ready to use again.

From a sustainability standpoint I think it is a very interesting project but, in addition, the skeins have such a perfect presentation that I can help but find the whole process so amazing.

Don't you think it is a wonderful initiative?

Bolso de punto / Knit bag

Este verano, además de tejer cosas para bebés, he tenido tiempo para hacer un proyecto que me hacía mucha ilusión, una versión adaptada de mi bolso favorito de eccomin.

Es un diseño que siempre he querido hacer y como tenía unos ovillos de Phildar Amazone con una calidad muy similar a la del modelo original me pareció que podía quedar bien.

No es la primera vez que uso este hilo para hacer un bolso, ya que es el mismo que utilicé el año pasado para hacer el patrón "French Market Bag" así que parece que estos ovillos estén predestinados a convertirse en accesorios.

Como toque final, para el forro interior del bolso decidí utilizar la tela de una camisa que ya no me pongo pero que tiene un estampado que me encanta. La idea de utilizar la camisa surgió un poco por el Proyecto 333, ya que tras hacer limpieza en mi armario no me decidía a deshacerme de ella y se me ocurrió que podía darle una segunda vida utilizándola en alguno de mis proyectos. 

Aunque mi bolso no es exactamente como el original yo estoy encantada con el resultado y ya se ha convertido en uno de mis favoritos.

This summer, in addition to knitting things for babies, I also had time to make a project I was very excited about, an adapted version of my favorite eccomin bag.

It is a design I have always wanted to make and as I had some  Phildar Amazone skeins which quality is very similar to the one of the original model I though it could come out well.

It is not the first time that I use this yarn to make a bag, as it is the same I used last year to make the "French Market Bag" pattern so it seems like these skeins are predestined to becoming accesories.

As final touch, for the inside lining I decided to use the fabric from a shirt I don't wear anymore but which has a print that I love. The idea of using the shirt kind of arose from Project 333, as after making a wardrobe clean out I couldn't get rid of it and I thought I could give it a second life using it in one of my projects.

Although my bag is not exactly as the original I am very happy with the result and it is already one of my favorites.

Zero Waste - "Project 333" by Courtney Carver

Desde hace algún tiempo estoy concienciada con ser más sostenible en mi estilo de vida y uno de los primeros pasos que he dado en ese sentido ha sido seguir el desafío "Make Nine Challenge"  con la intención de dar uso a los ovillos que tengo almacenados en casa transformándolos en proyectos concretos que me gusten y vaya a disfrutar una vez terminados.

Sin embargo, creo que también es necesario avanzar en otros aspectos de mi vida y, por eso, estoy en proceso de adaptar mi armario al "Proyecto 333"  de "Be More with Less".

Descubrí esta iniciativa a través de Internet y, como me pareció una propuesta muy interesante, decidí comprar el libro con la intención de que me sirviera como guía en el proceso que, desde el principio, supe que no me iba a resultar fácil.

La idea inicial es muy sencilla: elegir 33 prendas para utilizar durante los 3 meses siguientes. 

Lo que es complicado, por lo menos en mi caso, es adoptar el proceso mental (y emocional) que lleva a ser capaz de realizar esa elección. No se trata de reducir el número de prendas porque sí, sino de ser capaz de simplificar algo tan “sencillo” cómo decidir qué ponernos porque tenemos claro el tipo de prendas que se ajustan realmente a nuestro estilo de vida. 

Todavía estoy en una fase muy inicial de toma de conciencia y, siendo sincera, no sé si llegaré a cumplir el objetivo de que sean sólo 33 prendas (¡me parecen muy pocas!) pero entiendo que es un proceso largo y voy a intentar seguir las pautas en todo lo que pueda para hacerlo lo mejor posible.

De momento, este verano mi objetivo principal es entrar en la dinámica de ser capaz de seleccionar mis imprescindibles (y deshacerme de todo lo demás) para seguir avanzando en otoño y dejar de perder el tiempo pensando en qué ponerme, o peor aún, en por qué tengo tanta ropa que nunca me pongo.

Since a while ago I am awared with having a more sustainable lifestyle and one of the first steps I've made in this sense is following the  "Make Nine Challenge" with the aim of using my stash yarn to transfrom it in specific projects that I like and that I am going to enjoy once finished.

However, I think it is also necessary to move forward in other aspects of my life and, that is why, I am in the process of adapting my wardrobe to  "Project 333" by  "Be More with Less".

I found about this initiative on the internet and, as I thought it was something that could fit what I needed, I decided to buy the book with the aim of using it as a guide in the process which, since the beginning, I knew that wasn't going to be easy for me.

The starting idea is very simple: choosing 33 garments to use during the following 3 months.

What is more complicated, at least for me, is to adopt the mental (and emotional) process that leads to being able to make that choice. It is not just reducing the number of garments mindless,but being able to simplify something as "easy" as deciding what to wear because we are clear about the type of garments that really fit our lifestyle.

I am still at a very early stage of awareness and, to be honest, I don't know whether I will be able to fulfill the objective of choosing just 33 garments (I think they are very few!) but I understand that it is a long process and I am going to try to follow the guidelines as much as I can so I can do my best.

At the moment, this summer my main objective is to come into the dynamics of being able to choose my essentials (and getting rid of all the rest) to continue progressing in autumn and stop losing time thinking about what to wear or, even worse, about why I have so many clothes that I never wear.

Vertical Stripes Sweater

El último proyecto del desafío "The Make Nine Challenge"  que he terminado es el jersey Vertical Stripes Sweater  de PetiteKnit  en versión de verano porque lo he tejido con hilo de algodón.

Cuando escogí los diseños para el desafío tenía en mente tejerlo con lana pero, teniendo en cuenta mi objetivo de utilizar parte de mi stash, me pareció una buena idea utilizar ovillos de DROPS Belle  que me habían sobrado después de hacer el jersey Davallia  el año pasado.

Como complemento, he añadido un toque de color rosa con unos ovillos de DROPS Lace  que también tenía desde hace tiempo en casa.

La verdad es que ha sido un poco experimento porque es una combinación de un hilo rústico de algodón y lino con otro más fino de alpaca y seda, pero me gusta mucho el resultado y le da un aire especial a un jersey que tiene un diseño muy sencillo.

Al igual que cuando tejí el jersey Sunday Sweater , me ha sorprendido lo agradable que se hace tejer este patrón y, por supuesto, antes de que llegue el frío tejeré una segunda versión con lana para los días de invierno.

¿Os gusta cómo ha quedado?

The last project from "The Make Nine Challenge" I have finished is the  Vertical Stripes Sweater from  PetiteKnit in a summer version as I have knitted it with cotton yarn.

When I chose the designs for the challenge I wanted to knit it with wool but, considering my goal of using part of my stash, I thought it was a good idea to use the spare skeins from  DROPS Belle I had after making  Davallia sweater last year.

As a complement, I added a touch of pink colour with some  DROPS Lace skeins I also had at home since some time ago.

The truth is it has been some kind of experiment because it is a mix of cotton and linen rustic yarn with a thinner alpaca and silk yarn, but I like the result very much as it adds a special allure to a sweater with a very simple design.

Just like when I knitted the  Sunday Sweater, I am very surprised of how nice it is to knit this pattern and, of course, before cold weather arrives I will knit a second version with wool for winter days.

Last-Minute Cowl

Cuando empecé con el desafío "The Make Nine Challenge"  pensaba que me iba a costar resistirme  a hacer proyectos fuera de "mi lista" pero, la verdad, este método me está ayudando mucho a organizarme y, para mi sorpresa, estoy siendo muy obediente.

El último proyecto que he terminado es el cuello "Last-Minute Cowl"  de  Church Mouse Yarns  y, aunque puede parecer un proyecto muy fácil de hacer, para mí es una idea que cumple a la perfección con lo que me he propuesto conseguir con este desafío.

En concreto, me ha servido para encontrar (¡por fin!) un proyecto que me gustara para utilizar el último ovillo de "The Wool"  de  We Are Knitters  que me sobró después de tejer el jersey "1760 Sweater"   hace, nada más y nada menos, que... ¡6 años!

Tenía claro que para este tipo de lana lo ideal era un proyecto sencillo pero, hasta el momento, no me había parado a buscar algo a medida así que ahora me alegro de haber encontrado un proyecto adecuado con la excusa del desafío.

¿No os parece que los proyectos sencillos a veces son los más acertados?

When I started with  "The Make Nine Challenge" I thought it was going to be hard for me to resist myself from making projects outside "my list" but, indeed, this method is helping me a lot getting organised and, to my surprise, I am being very obedient.

The last project I have finished is  "Last-Minute Cowl" by  Church Mouse Yarns and, although it may seem a very easy to make project, for me it is an idea which meets perfectly what I want to achieve with this challenge.

In particular, it served me to (finally!) find a project I liked to use the last  "The Wool" by  We Are Knitters skein I had spare after knitting the "1760 Sweater", exactly,... 6 years ago!

It was clear for me that for this kind of wool the ideal thing was a simple project but, until the moment, I hadn't stopped to look for something to measure so now I am happy for being able to finding a suitable project with the excuse of the challenge.

Don't you think that simple project sometimes are the most accurate?

Ideas sencillas de decoración DIY / Easy DIY decor ideas

En estos días que estoy pasando tanto tiempo en casa estoy recuperando mi interés por la decoración y no hago más que descubrir ideas muy sencillas para hacer con algunos materiales que ya tengo.

Los objetos de decoración siempre me han parecido una opción muy buena para dar uso a ovillos  de algodón y trapillo y ahora que me he propuesto ser lo más sostenible posible, empezando por utilizar lo que ya tengo, he descubierto un montón de posibilidades diferentes que me encantan.

Desde las clásicas cestas de ganchillo hasta ideas más elaboradas como un tapiz o una funda para un lámpara, todo vale para dar ese toque diferente a nuestra casa y hacerla un lugar realmente especial del que disfrutar.

These days when I am spending more time at home I am coming back to my interest for decoration and I can't help but finding some ideas very easy to make with some of the materials I already have.

I have always found that decor objects are a good choice to use cotton and zpagetti skeins and now that I am comitted to being as much sustainable as possible, starting by using what I already have, I have discovered many different possibilities which I love.

From classic crochet baskets to more elaborated ideas such as a wall hanging or a cover for a lamp, anything goes to add that different touch to our house and make it a really special place to enjoy.

Mo Simple Scarf

Uno de los objetivos del desafío "The Make Nine Challenge"  es producir de una forma más sostenible y, en mi caso, la fórmula que he encontrado para cumplir este aspecto ha sido dar uso a los ovillos que tengo en mi "stash".

Por eso, cuando escogí los proyectos que quería hacer durante 2020 busqué ideas que pudiera realizar sin comprar más de lo necesario y uno de los proyectos que cumplía estos requisitos era el patrón gratuito "Mo Simple Scarf"  de Church Mouse Yarns.

Justo en diciembre había terminado el jersey "Sunday Sweater"  y me habían sobrado varios ovillos de DROPS Air  y DROPS Kid Silk  que me daba mucha pena no utilizar porque estos dos hilos son súper agradables justo, así que la idea de hacer una bufanda "extra large"  me parecía perfecta.

El resultado es una bufanda de lana como las de toda la vida: calentita, larga y con flecos pero que me viene de maravilla porque, aunque parezca mentira, hasta ahora nunca había tejido una bufanda de este estilo.

One of the goals of  "The Make Nine Challenge" is to make in a more sustainable manner and, in my case, the formula I found to achieve this aspect was to use the skeins I have in my stash.

Therefore, when I chose the projects I wanted to make during 2020 I looked for ideas I could make without buying more than the necessary and one of the projects that fulfilled these requirements was  Church Mouse Yarns "Mo Simple Scarf" free pattern.

Just in december I had finished the  "Sunday Sweater" and I had some spare skeins from  DROPS Air and  DROPS Kid Silk I was sad not to use as these two yarns are really nice together, so I found that the idea of making an extra large scarf  was perfect.

The result is a good old style wool scarf: warm, long and with fringes but that suits me really well because, even though it seems unbelivable, I had never knitted a scarf of this type so far.

A principios de este año me propuse tomarme en serio el objetivo de reducir mi "stash"  y, por eso, cuando me planteé el desafío "Make Nine Challenge"  tuve en cuenta los ovillos que ya tenía en casa para elegir los proyectos que quería hacer.

La verdad es que no  me llevó mucho tiempo y fue más fácil de lo que pensaba, pero es que realmente tengo mucho donde escoger así que supongo que tampoco tiene tanto mérito.

Entre mis ovillos favoritos a los que asignar proyecto estaban los de DROPS Air  y DROPS Kid Silk que me sobraron después de terminar el jersey "Sunday Sweater"  y, ahora que he empezado a tejer las primeras vueltas del nuevo proyecto, estoy bastante segura de que he escogido un patrón perfecto para esta combinación de hilos.

At the beginning of this year I resolved to take the goal of reducing my stash seriously and, therefore, when I thought about the  "Make Nine Challenge" I considered the skeins I already had at home to select the projects I wanted to make.

Honestly it didn't take me much time and it was easier than I thought, but I really have many to choose from so I guess it's not such an achievement.

Among my favorite skeins waiting to be assigned a project were the ones from  DROPS Air and  DROPS Kid Silk left after finishing the  "Sunday Sweater" and, now that I have started knitting the first rows of the new project, I am pretty sure that I have chosen a perfect pattern for this combination of yarn.

Make Nine Challenge 2020

En mi despedida de 2019 os contaba que no tenía una planificación de nuevos proyectos para este año pero justo esta semana, gracias a una foto que Yarnitas  ha publicado en su cuenta de Instagram , me he animado hacer una lista con algunas ideas que me gustaría hacer en 2020.

Todo parte de la iniciativa "The Make Nine Challenge"  de Home Row Fiber Co.  que tiene como intención promover la creatividad de una forma más sostenible, centrando nuestro interés "productivo" en unos pocos proyectos.

En un principio pensaba que era algo parecido al famoso "Best Nine" de Instagram  pero ahora que sé que tiene un enfoque más sostenible me parece una idea todavía más interesante, una especie de "crear menos para crear mejor".

Así que, partiendo de algunas ideas que tenía en mi lista de favoritos y pensando en algunos ovillos que ya tengo en mi "stash", he escogido los nueve proyectos que más me gustaría hacer este año. 

Seguramente no me dará tiempo a hacer todos pero tengo un poco de curiosidad por saber qué tal se me dará el desafío...

In my farewell to 2019 I told you I hadn't planned any new projects for this year but just this week, thanks to a picture that  Yarnitas published on her  Instagram account, I have brought myself to make a list with some ideas I would like to make in 2020.

It all starts with "The Make Nine Challenge" initiative from  Home Row Fiber Co. which aims at promoting creativity on a more sustainable way, focusing our "productive" interest in just a few projects.

At the beginning I thought it was something similar to the popular  Instagram "Best Nine" but now that I know it has a more sustainable approach I find it is even a more interesting idea, something like "making less to make better".

So, starting from some ideas I had on my favorites list and thinking about some skeins I already have on my stash, I have chosen the nine projects I would like to make most this year.

Surely I won't have enough time to make all of them but I feel a little bit curious to know how I will manage the challenge...
